In the United States, there is a need for professionals with education training. If you prefer to provide more in-depth instruction to older kids, an education degree for middle or high school teaching is your best bet. The fun part about teaching on this level is working in one specific subject in which you excel, rather than providing an overview of all subjects. You can teach anything from English, math, or history, to auto mechanics, business education, or computer repair. You can also supervise extracurricular activities or coach a sports team.

Do you have a heart for students with special needs? Special education might be the way to go. These teachers work with students who have a variety of learning and physical disabilities. With a special education degree, you can work in a traditional school and provide resource room and one-on-one assistance, or you can work in a special education school that serves students with more severe disabilities. If you’d like to achieve a Masters or Ph.D. in nutrition, you should first review admission requirements to nutrition graduate programs. Typically, prospective students must take an aptitude test prior to enrollment. The Role Of Geographic Profiling In Serial Violent Crime Investigation

Geographic profiling is an information management system and investigative methodology that evaluates the locations of connected serial crimes to determine the most probable area of offender residence.

It can be applied in cases of serial murder, rape, arson, robbery and bombings.

Background and History

The name most closely associated with geographical profiling is Kim Rossmo. Rossmo began studying geographical profiling as part of his PhD studies at Simon Fraser University (British Columbia, Canada).

He studied under professors Paul and Patricia Brentingham, who had developed a theoretical crime model which examined where crimes were most likely to happen, based on offender residence, workplace and leisure activity.

Put simply, the Brentingham model maintains that we all have an ‘activity space’ related to the areas in which we live, work and play and that this activity space produces a discernible pattern of movement around the city.

In relation to criminal activity, therefore, it follows that an offender has to know about a particular geographical area before he or she begins selecting crimes to commit; and where the offenders movement patterns intersect within this geographical area, will to a large extent determine where the crime takes place.

Kim Rossmo noted that the Brentingham model was examined primarily in relation to crime prevention and was interested in approaching the topic from the opposite perspective i.e. asking the question, what does the location of a crime say about where the offender might live?

Acknowledging the potential investigative use of this research the Vancouver Police Department established the worlds first Geographic Profiling Section in 1995. Since it’s launch, Scotland Yard, The FBI, The New York Police Department and The Royal Canadian Mounted Police have all called upon the services of the geographic profiling section.

How Does Geographical Profiling Work?

Geographic profiling works on the premise that the location of a crime site can provide the police with vital information. It assesses and predicts the offender’s most likely place of residence, place of work, social venues and travel routes etc.

Geographic profiling consists of both quantitative (objective) scientific geographic techniques and qualitative (subjective) components e.g. a reconstruction and interpretation of the offender’s mental map.’

The primary geographic technique is a computerised system known as Criminal Geographic Targeting (CGT). Put simply, spatial data i.e. data relating to time, distance and movement to and from the crime scenes is analysed to produce a three-dimensional model known as a jeopardy surface.

The jeopardy surface contains height and colour probability codes which when superimposed onto a map of the area in which the serial crimes have been committed give an indication of the likelihood of offender residence or place of work.

Although the science underpinning geographic profiling can be difficult to comprehend, it’s easy to see how this approach can offer practical assistance in the course of a criminal investigation. As Rossmo points out:

‘By establishing the probability of the offender residing in various areas and displaying those results on a map, police efforts to apprehend criminals can be assisted. This information allows police departments to focus their investigative efforts, geographically prioritise suspects, and concentrate patrol efforts in those zones where the criminal predator is likely to be active’.

A series of crimes is committed.

The crimes are investigated via traditional means.

Linking analysis conducted to ascertain which crimes are connected.

Psychological profile of the unknown subject conducted.

Geographical profile constructed.

New investigative strategies developed and pursued.

Methodology

In preparing a geographic profile, a number of operational procedures will be followed. These include:

Examination of the case file: Witness statements, autopsy reports & psychological profile (if available).

Inspection of the crime scene.

Meetings and discussions with lead investigators.

Visits to the crime sites when practical.

Analysis of local crime statistics and demographic data.

Study of street, zoning and rapid transit maps.

Overall analysis and report submission.

Why Are Homeschoolers Criticized

Accreditation of the homeschool and loss of revenue are the biggest concerns of homeschooling.

Public school districts get money for each student enrolled and in attendance. Homeschooling is reducing their funds.

Some district superintendents are genuinely concerned that homeschooled students are not learning essential skills because they are not being taught by professional educators. But their opposition is based on the loss of revenue, face and stature.

Some districts support homeschooling but others take an adversarial position and try to intimidate the participants.

Most professional teachers refuse to accept the fact that the vast majority of public schools fail the students on every level, and deny that they can be replaced by uneducated “homespun hicks.” This concept is too humiliating to accept, so they justify their positions by criticizing the homeschool system. They try to discredit homeschooling by focusing on the myth that the homeschooled student lacks social skills and most often becomes a loner who cannot mix with peers. In actually, these criticisms are contradicted by the statistics that dispel these rumors and innuendos.

The vast majority of homeschoolers outscore their public educated counterparts in all facets of life and education. The deficiencies in social skills professional educators are so worried about are most often found in children who get “lost in the scuffle” and are not valued as individuals (obviously not the homeschooled child).

Homeschoolers have disproved these myths by producing students who excel on every level. If you are considering homeschooling, do not be intimidated. When you approach the public school administration do so with a firm resolve and knowledge. Statistics are on your side. You are doing what is best for your child.

Acing CSET

Not to many people would want to be a teacher these days, but if you’re one of the chosen few who desires to be a teacher in California then you might be informed that you ought to corroborate your teaching aptitude for the subject that you intend to teach. Goof thing the aspirants are now given two options to reach their goal, one is that they could finish a course or a program of that subject they want to teach from a recognized institute or two, they could pass the subject they want to teach and/or another prerequisites to the so called CSET which is the acronym of California Subject Examination for Teachers.

Four Approaches to Journal Entries in the Classroom

The four approaches to journal entries discussed are: learning development, artifact, expression, and social interaction. Furthermore, I will be evaluating these four approaches in this article, so that teachers can utilize them in their classrooms.

Learning languages and techniques will differ according to grade level. Only half of the population in schools today is above the national average in reading and writing. These statistics are available in major magazines and newspapers. Much of the attention that the teacher needs to disseminate to students and parents today is academic. Everyone must know where the student is in terms of academic progress. But what about the much needed attention to what a student is writing on a daily basis?

A well rounded teacher, in my opinion, should be able to teach two learning languages simultaneously Similarly, teachers that deal with handicapped, special education, or learning handicapped, really have their hands full. Social skills and language expression can be defined through the teachers’ high expectations to create a love for communication and writing.

Each student must take responsibility for their opinions while at the same time participating in cooperative group projects like the writing process, editing, and proofreading. These all promote teamwork. When students read each others’ papers and offer editing and content help, along with verbal praise for content, there is great growth in developing the student writer. These are ALL heralded in my classroom.

Furthermore, learning language as development must include modeling and scaffolding. The teacher models writing by actually creating stories, outlines, Venn-diagrams, notes, you name it, in front of the children right there on the spot. That’s true modeling. You would see this more in Kindergarten and Second Grade verses upper and middle school grades.

Learning language as artifacts promote in depth thinking skills among students. When students learn a particular part of language it spawns more ideas. Artifacts such as brainstorming, making an outline, and creating student made author profiles, are very useful to create awesome writing in the classroom. I have also had great success when students create pictures and or make pictures while I’m lecturing, and then develop essay answers on the spot by looking at their drawings. Use everything you can think of in the classroom, especially when it comes to artifacts.

Every student can learn in a variety of writing situations. Never forget: Every student can learn. Every student can write. Every student can read. Never give up on a student. Ever.

The teacher, psychologist, and even an outside advocate, must promote the overall goal of student learning, literacy, and promotion. It is always my goal to bring out the best in all my students.

Learning as development, using artifacts, and specific social and expressive language teaching techniques will enable the students to learn more effectively and rapidly. I would use groups, lectures, and even projects with these techniques. Journaling each and every step of the way. We must get back to allowing students to journal on each and every assignment. Students can have a journal sitting right next to their textbook, and make notes about what they are learning in math, social studies, science, and language.

Thus, the students will have habitual learning and writing techniques that they can take with them until they finish high school and into the college settings. Essentially, writing and literacy through journals that they can take with them-forever.
