Public Schools – Mainstream Or Minority

September 12, 2009 College Preparedness No Comments

In news reports around the country, there is an increasing number of stories about controversial materials being included in school curriculums, battles over how much “religion” children are forced to participate in with reciting the “Pledge of Allegiance,” security for children attending public schools, and the quality of teachers responsible for the development of our children. Trends are moving increasingly toward giving a loud voice to fringe and minority groups based on freedoms of speech and expression. At increasingly younger ages, children are being forced to confront issues about sexuality, drug use, abortion rights, gay rights, violence, and other issues that our society as a whole finds difficult to resolve.

Public schools seem to have strayed significantly from their intended purpose of providing a level of quality education that reflects the desires of the communities they serve in a forced effort to accommodate the views of fringe and minority influences. In addressing issues being raised, it might be helpful to recall what now seems to be getting lost in the fires of debate over the kind of education children receive when attending a public school. The purpose of education is to provide a process by which children are equipped to move from the ignorance and innocence of adolescence into the responsible role of informed, productive, and contributing adults who are capable of making beneficial decisions about the future course of society.

This responsibility is not a single handed effort to be left completely up to the people who provide the information our children learn in schools, but a partnership that necessarily includes the participation and influences represented by the parents of these children. When there is a growing divide between the perspectives of the parents and teachers who direct the process of educating children, the entire system fails to serve the community, and the children emerge with a distorted and confused ability to make decisions about their own place in social development.

The role of public schools is to provide a well planned process of discovery that reflects the mainstream desires and perspectives of the communities they serve. Children begin the process by directly reflecting the results of parental teachings they received prior to entering into the system, and should be allowed to follow through a progressive process of developing basic functional skills, gaining an understanding of how to increase their ability to learn new skills and ideas, and finally emerge with what they need to make informed decisions of their own. Where there may be clashes between the perspective of parents and educators, it is essential for both parents and teachers to recognize their respective roles in resolving these issues appropriately.

Institutions should be required to vigorously defend and maintain their place in reflecting the mainstream majority views of the communities they operate within, and keep parents clearly informed on positions these views represent. In turn, when a parent recognizes that mainstream views run counter to their own system of beliefs and opinion, it is their own responsibility to participate in relating this information to their children without disrupting the processes established by public institutions. If a parent becomes completely appalled by what their children are learning from within the public system of education, they should be willing to consider a process of private or home schooling that is more in line with their own system of beliefs.

Although the public school system should be able to introduce reflections and opinions generated by minority elements, the focus for doing this should also be in the more advanced stages of learning, when children have reached a sufficient level of maturity to give them a chance to progress through the early stages of development, and allows the time they need to better understand themselves and who they are as individuals. When a child that has not yet reached puberty is confronted with trying to understand whether or not they are homosexual, because of material they obtain in the school library, something has gone extremely wrong with following the mainstream educational process.

As people move into adulthood, it is a natural tendency for them to test the validity of the values and perspectives they have been taught by previous generations. It is at this stage of our development when such activities are both appropriate and beneficial. Public education should be crafted to be the best possible model for what the majority of parents view as an “ideal” learning experience, and should do a good job of determining where the presentation of this goal has fallen short. Parents need to maintain their vigilance in understanding the course of mainstream views, and be prepared to make good decisions about moving their children toward or away from the acceptance of these majority ideas.

How to Understand Your Behavior

For many of years, philosophers, behaviorists, psychologists, and psychiatrists have been trying to understand human behavior. Many have come close to understanding how behavior is imprinted or store into the body, but many lacked the last details to form a complete picture.

It eluded many of them because they had psychological issue that they had not resolved. And, this got in their way of seeing the true secret of human behavior.

Many of the therapies that exist today still do not address the real cause of behavior. Instead they teach their clients how to continue to suppress their feelings so that they can control their behavior. This is an injustice to the client because in time suppressing feeling leads to suffering from severe physical and mental illness.

But, I will tell you now, that to change your behavior is not easy and if you decide to do something about it, it will take a long time. But if you do nothing to start changing yourself, you will remain the same as you are now, for the rest of your life.

If you feel at peace, don’t harbor ill thoughts about other people, have good relationships with people, don’t get upset quickly, and have plenty of patience, and then you may be a well balance person.

However, many of you may think that you’re ok, and that you don’t have any problems. There are very few people that don’t have behavioral issues to deal with and those that say they don’t are usually in denial.

If you have addictions – drugs, smoking, and alcohol, sexual – or other excessive or annoying behaviors you have probably heard that the failure rate of therapies that target them to be 80% or more.

To clear addictions and even well established destructive behaviors takes more than what these psychological therapeutic sessions can give you. Most therapies are designed to suppress the addictive urges or behaviors that you have. This suppression does not cure your addictions and has side effects that can create other addictions and diminish your long-term health.

A true therapy works to release and eliminate the energy of your suppressed traumatic memories or experiences. Most all behavior originates in childhood. If you were raised with love and affection, then most of your behavior is probably normal. Unfortunately many people believe that they were raised in a loving family when this was not the case.

If you were raised in a family where you receive verbal and physical abuse then this trauma has been imprinted into your whole body and is held there by a system called the defense mechanism. It is this system that works all your life to hold this trauma suppressed so that you can function and believe that everything is ok when it really is not.

It is your responsibility to learn what causes behavior and to deal with any bad or unwanted behavior you have. Your defense mechanism cannot keep all your past trauma suppressed all of your life. It allows some of this trauma to leak out because in cannot hold it in check, since it becomes weaker in time. The danger in suppress trauma is that it damages your health in places where it is stored in your body. And as it leaks out it fuels your bad behavior.

The Truth About Our Physical Education History

Remember high school gym class? You played volleyball, ran a mile on the track, and ducked before being hit in the face during a vigorous game of dodge ball? Physical education has been part of the educational scene for nearly 200 years. It is vital that students participate in physical education to keep their mind and body in peak learning condition. Currently, the childhood obesity rate is dangerously climbing to epidemic levels. Therefore, the focus on physical education is more important then ever before.

The question is how should physical education be conducted? First, take a look at physical education history. Physical education has evolved over the years. Physical education is defined as “instruction in the development and care of the body ranging from simple calisthenics exercises to a course of study providing training in hygiene, gymnastics, and the performance and management of athletic games (Merriam-Webster Dictionary).” This definition is broad because you can learn several topics ranging from the rules of basketball to sex education. It depends on the school policies of your state educational system.

Physical education was officially recognized in the United States in the early 1800’s. Colleges and Universities began to offer physical education programs throughout the 1800’s. Finally, in 1866 California was the first to mandate physical education. Many states followed this mandate within the next 30 years. The importance of training the body as well as the mind became prevalent in the educational system.

The 20th century brought varying levels of physical education to each state. Presidents such as Eisenhower and Kennedy promoted physical education and fitness. Children took the Presidential Fitness test each year to assess their physical fitness level. This arose from the need for U.S. students to be as physical fit as their European counterparts.

Controversial issues have played an integral role in physical education history. For example, in 1972 Title IX banned sexual discrimination in schools regarding sports and academics. This allowed female athletes to actively participate in team sports other than cheerleading with the financial and emotional support of the school system.

Another controversial issue is sexual education. It has been the subject of intense debate for many decades. Each state has specific guidelines about what will be taught and whether students can opt out of the sexual education program. Some states allow students to watch a video of a child being born while other states only discuss abstinence.

The official employment of physical education programs has a 200 year history which has become home to controversial issues, social reform, and overall child well being. Physical education will continue to evolve as the needs of the student population changes, societal attitudes fluctuate, and the flow of educational funds towards physical education is maintained.
