Discover the Secrets of Personality Type

February 21, 2010 College Preparedness No Comments

Have you ever wondered why your spouse, coworkers, or children seem to think so differently from you? You may not understand why they make the decisions they do, or why they place such importance on things that seem inconsequential to you. It is possible to understand the answers to all these questions. The secret lies in the theory of Myers-Briggs personality type.

In the 1960’s a psychological theorist named Katharine Briggs had many of the same questions you do. She wondered why some of her family members had such logical, linear thinking processes, when she herself was more likely to take values and feelings into account when considering an issue. In her research with her daughter Isabel Briggs Myers, she looked into this question and others, and discovered four central aspects of personality. Each one of us can be classified as either:

• Extroverted/Introverted—Do you get your energy from being with people, or being alone?
• Sensing/Intuitive—Do you see what’s actual, or what’s possible?
• Thinking/Feeling—Do you make decisions with your head or your heart?
• Judging/Perceiving—Do you like to make decisions, or keep your options open?

Our classifications on each of the scales is combined to make a four-letter type, for instance, ENTP, or ISFJ. There are sixteen types in all, encompassing all possible combinations.

With so many possibilities, you can imagine how much potential for misunderstanding there is with those around us! If we marry, or parent, or even work with someone who is very different from us, we can become increasingly baffled as to how their minds work. The key to unlocking the mystery and understanding those around us is to first understand yourself.

Where do you think you fall on the scales listed above? It can be difficult to decide, but fortunately the creators of this theory have also created a scientifically validated assessment that can tell you where you fall. This personality test is called the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and is the most accurate and efficient way to identify your own type. Most recently it has become available in an online format, which allows convenient access to anyone wishing to discover more about themselves. The official Myers-Briggs Type Indicator can be used to produce several different types of reports, from basic to detailed, all of which you can refer to as you learn more about your own Type.

Once you have discovered your Type, you can begin to think about how others may differ. If you are an extrovert, you may be surprised when others want to leave a social gathering or end a conversation before you do. It doesn’t mean they’re unfriendly or not having a good time; it’s just that introverts rely on their alone time to recharge. As another example, if you’re a Thinker, you may mistrust people who seem to make decisions based on their “gut” or their feelings rather than logic. But turn this around and you’ll realize that your own decisions may seem cold and uncaring to someone who is a Feeling type. There is no right or wrong; only individual preferences.

The world is made up of many types, and this is for the best! We need people who are gregarious, and those that are content to live much of their lives independently. We need visionaries with their heads in the clouds, and people who will take care of all the details. We need planners, and people who fly by the seat of their pants; when making decisions we need both someone to remind us of the logic of the situation and someone to help us do a “gut check.” Learning more about personality types can help you appreciate all the variation you’ll see around you. Most importantly, it will help you use your differences to everyone’s benefit.

Gap Year – Taking Off A Year

February 18, 2010 College Preparedness No Comments

What is a “Gap Year?” Actually, it’s the new term for taking off a year after high school but before college. Sound fun? Not if you think it’s for slackers.

A gap year is intended to help kids get a better grasp on the real world after high school. Three months off before you start college isn’t enough for some. This “gap year” idea can give college students a better attempt to manage money and graduate in the typical 4 years. Unfortunately, only 37% of freshmen complete the 4-year degree according to the Education Trust of Washington, DC.

Some students volunteer, travel abroad, or intern. This work can cost money, but in some instances, make the students money. Americorps.org offers a good source for volunteer work. Interimprograms.com tries to match students with an intern program that matches their career goals. If you want to travel and learn about a foreign country before you start school, then you should check out whereyouheaded.com.

William Fitzsimmons of Harvard co-wrote an article about “Time out or burn our for the next generation.” He discusses why letting kids devote time to their own pursuits gives them a break from the stress of high school.

Who pays for this “gap year?” Well, it depends on what your students do. Some programs pay the students, while others expect payment for your kid’s hiatus. Some parents do an equal share savings for the gap year.

What about financial aid? Usually, you’ll have to reapply. It’s a good idea to get accepted to a college first, and then ask for a deferment.

What about getting behind? Sure, you might get behind a year with your peers, but think of a nice conversational piece you’ll have to discuss on your resume while your peers have nothing.

Some see the gap year as an opportunity for education, but others see it as procrastination. It’s not for everyone, just as college isn’t for everyone. With proper planning and guidance, it could make college more bearable and more rewarding.

Amino Information

February 14, 2010 College Preparedness No Comments

Chemistry will tell you that an amino acid is any molecule that has both carboxylic acid and amino functional groups. They are the basic building units of a protein. In biochemistry, the shorter and more general term is used to refer to alpha amino acids. Those are amino acids wherein the amino and carboxylate functionalities are attached to a common carbon. Amino acids’ residue is what’s left of an amino acid once a water molecule has been lost in the formation of a peptide bond. Peptides are polymer chains which form the protien in our bodies.

Twenty amino acids will be encoded by the standard genetic code. These are called proteinogenic or standard allamino.com” target=”blank Amino acids. More complicated ones are produced by our bodies, and are called nonstandard (these are not as common). Proline is the only proteinogenic amino acid, whose side group links to the a-amino group and is cyclic. This forms a secondary amino group. Before, proline was called “imino”, which was misleading and was changed. Protiens contain other amino acids which are usually formed by post-translational modification (modifications AFTER translation). These modifications are essential for the function of protein. At least two amino acids, other than the standard 20, are sometimes incorporated into proteins during the translation process.

Even though only 20 amino acids are genetically encoded, over one hundred have been found in nature. Some of these have been seen in meteorites, especially in a type called carbonaceous chondrites. Microorganisms and plants can often produce somewhat uncommon amino acids, which are located in peptidic antibiotics. Lanthionine is a sulfide-bridged alanine dimer found along with unsaturated amino acids in “lantibiotics”, which are antibiotic peptides of microbial origin.

As well as protein synthesis, amino acids have some other biologically important jobs. Glycine, and glutamate, are used as neurotransmitters as well as standard amino acids in proteins. Many amino acids take on the role of synthesizing other molecules, such as tryptophan, which is a precursor of the neurotransmitter serotonin, and glycine, one of the few reactants in the synthesis of porphyrins such as heme. Heme is in “hemoglobin”, which is also important in the makeup of protein. Numerous, non-standard amino acids, are biologically important: “GABA”,another neurotransmitter, carnitine, which is used in lipid transport within the cell, citrulline, ornithine, hydroxyproline, hydroxylysine, homocysteine, and sarcosine.

The Top Five Tips On How To Choose A College Major

February 14, 2010 College Preparedness No Comments

Choosing a college major is a challenge for many college students at one time or another. In fact, it’s not uncommon for college students to change their major after spending a year or two pursuing a college major that they are no longer interested in. And of course, it’s better to change your major than carry on in a career that you will not be satisfied with. But it does help if you can determine your college major as quickly as possible and here are five tips to help you do that.

1. First of all consider what natural talents or skills that you possess. Very often it’s a good idea to try to pursue a career in a field where you seem be naturally inclined or gifted. So consider your natural abilities and talents first, and see what careers are available where you could put them to best use. If there are no obvious talents or skills that you can identify, then think about the various career paths that are open to you and determine how much interest you have in each of them. Remember that you will most likely be successful in life if you are doing something that you really enjoy, not just doing it because you have to. So look for a career path that seems especially appealing to you, and then try to match the major to that career.

2. Before you choose your major, find out exactly what requirements you will need in order to attain your degree. Will you need to take supplementary courses? Will you need to complete an internship for your degree? Just make sure that you are prepared to complete whatever requirements there are for the major that you are considering before you begin.

3. You’ll also need to find out if there are prerequisites for the courses that you want to take. Very often, certain major courses require that you have completed other prerequisites in advance. So be sure that you have the credits that you need to be able to pursue a new major.

4. It cannot be overemphasized that you need to make sure that the course you will be taking, and the school that you will be attending for your major are fully accredited by a legitimate accreditation agency. There is a need to be wary of some colleges and online schools that offer exceptional educational bargains for your major. There is a very good chance that they could wind up being a diploma mill, meaning that the education you receive there cannot be accredited or verified by a recognized accreditation agency, and therefore is of very little value in the employment world. So check to make sure that the courses you are taking, and the school you will be attending, are fully accredited by a legitimate well-recognized accreditation agency.

5. Also considered the teachers or professors who you will be learning from. What kind of degrees do they hold and where did they go to school? What kind of reputation do they have as a teacher? You want to be sure that those that are teaching you are fully qualified to give you a solid education in the major that you will be pursuing.

There are other considerations as well when trying to determine what major to pursue in college, but hopefully the suggestions and tips given above will help you get started on the road toward making the right decision for you personally.

Distance Learning: How to Work and Study at the Same Time?

February 12, 2010 College Preparedness No Comments

Distance learning students seem to enjoy the best of everything. They get their education without actually needing to attend classes, and at the same time are able to keep their jobs and get a paycheck. In fact, this is one of the more prominent distance learning benefits that attract many students to make this their choice of education. In addition to that, distance learning students also gain the advantage of flexibility where they are able to study at their own pace without adhering to class schedules.

However, amidst these perks, distance learning requires a lot of discipline and motivation from students. When we are juggling between a job and studies, it is very easy to lose track of our priorities and fail to keep up to mark. Moreover, distance learning students do not have the advantage of getting their learning drive renewed whenever they interact with lecturers or peers in classes.

Therefore, how can distance learning students then overcome this challenge? The first thing that a student must have is good time management. Everyone has 24 hours and it is up to us to utilize our time in the best way possible. Set up a daily or weekly plan for yourself and ensure that you set aside time for your studies daily. If you have a family, let them know about your schedule so that they know when you should not be disturbed. Divide your time appropriately between your work, your family and your studies. Of course, discipline is important here as any schedule will not do any good if it is not followed.

Getting yourself motivated is also essential towards distance learning success. One of the ways to do this is to stay in contact with your classmates. With the internet today, it is often easy to stay in touch through email, instant messenger as well as internet phone. Discussing projects or assignments with your teammates will help you stay on track and keeps you and your teammates accountable for one another.

Setting goals and rewarding yourself when you attain them are great self-motivating habits. Start by drawing a chart on the milestones that you need to reach in order to complete your course. Strike out each goal as you complete them and reward yourself accordingly. There is a certain satisfaction whenever we see ourselves progressing and this becomes a motivating force for us to face the next hurdle.

Additionally, it is ever essential for a distance learning student to set up a quiet place for study away from home life distractions, such as the television, phone calls or other family members. Organize an off-limits study area or lock yourself in a quiet room to ensure optimum focus. Apart from that, a good chair, a strong table and adequate space are also essential elements in creating a conducive environment.

Finally, although distance learning is a great and effective learning concept, much of its effectiveness is dependent on the habits and determination of the individual. The full advantages of distance learning can only be gained through hard work, discipline and determination for success.

Importance Of Transformer In Field Of Electricity

The electric power now a days has become the necessity of people. Every consumers of any category such as commercial, residential etc needs electric power. So it has become duty of the government to generate electric power and transmit it to the consumers safely and satisfactorily.
The development of a state depends upon its industry, its business and other such options which plays a vital role in increasing the per capita income. But parallel to other needs of industry electricity is also a need. No machine can run without it. Similarly, now a days computer has become the part of every business office. It needs too electric power. So if it does not get electric power at appropriate level it will not work and the smoothness business ends.

Different types of consumers needs different voltage levels of electric current. For example a commercial consumer may need a voltage level of 11 kv or 440 v or 6.6 KV while a residential consumer needs power at level of 240 V.

For serving different consumers we cannot give supply to them from different generating stations generating power at different levels. It is not convenient and sometimes impossible. So it becomes a need to generate power at a level and to transmit it to other stations at a higher level and distribute it to consumers at different levels on the voltage level of their need.

So at every step whether voltage level should have to be increased or decreased we need a transformer. So the role of transformer in the transmission and distribution of electric power is very important.
The electric power is generated at a level of 12-15 KV and is stepped up to 220 KV or higher levels with the help of step up transformer. At the distribution stations it is stepped down to a lower level 66 KV and send to substations and then further decreasing to 11 KV and 400V it is divided between consumers with the help of stepdown transformer.
So transformer has become a necessity due to its important role in power transmission and distribution.

Transformer –In General

Transformer is basically a static device which is defined as a device which can step up or step down the voltage level of A.C. applied to its primary. If the transformer is step up then the voltage on secondary terminals will be high and if the transformer is stepdown then the voltage level on secondary terminals will be low. Any winding can be considered secondary and primary so any transformer may behave as stepup or step down transformer but it is possible only theoretically it is not possible practically on the behalf of insulation reasons. So transformers are wound for different types and for different voltage levels. For stepping up or down a voltage a suitable transformer should be choosed.

As said earlier transformer is a static device. In the construction of it we have a core which is made up of steel sheet stampings these stampings are cut into many steps such as i.e. etc. and are them assembled to have the complete core. On this core the secondary and primary windings are wound. Both the windings are insulated from each other as well as from the core. The no. of turns of primary and secondary coils determines whether it is step up transformer or step down transformer. For stepup transformer secondary no. of turns should be more as compared to primary. For step down transformer these should be less.

Now these windings on the transformer are immersed in the tank which is the mainbody of the transformer. The tank is filled with oil and provided with fins for cooling.

The transformer oil gives two fold results. It cools the windings and insulate the winding from the main tank body. The primary and secondary terminals are made ready with the help of bushings.

Now when the voltage is given to the primary winding of the transformer a flux gets produced, this flux alternating in nature follows a path on the core and get linked to the secondary winding hence a voltage is generated at the secondary winding.

So a transformer is based on FARADAYS LAWS OF ELECTROMAGNETIC INDUCTION.

The voltage generated on the secondary depends on the secondary and primary no. of turns.
N2/N1 = V2/V1 = I1/I2 = K

Here N is no of turns, V is voltage I is current. 1 and 2 denotes primary & secondary windings respectively. K is called transformation ratio. For the value of K>1 transformer is step-up type and for K
