Cosmetology Schools

Cosmetology specialists, sometimes called beauticians, beauty specialists, or estheticians, specialize in beauty treatment; their clients are most often women. However, that may be argued in some cases, as advances in the field and changes in cultural attitudes are making aesthetics more important to both sexes.

Cosmetologists provide hair care and other services that address appearance. Main cosmetology tasks are shampooing, conditioning, cutting, trimming, styling, and coloring hair. However, cosmetology may also involve advising clients on hair products and on the care of scalp and hair…and more, depending on choice of study and choice of school.

Disciplines of cosmetology can include various types of specialties in one or more categories: hair style and esthetics, shampoo and hair treatment, manicure and pedicure, or even electrolysis. Cosmetology students may choose to specialize in nail and skin care, to give manicures and pedicures, or to give facial treatments and provide makeup analysis. Or they may choose to care for wigs and hairpieces, cleaning and styling them for their clients.

The practice of cosmetology requires a license, which is acquired by attending cosmetology school and passing state examinations. There are numerous public and private vocational cosmetology schools, some offering evening as well as day classes to satisfy the needs of their students. Certification programs in cosmetology take one to two years of full-time study.

Cosmetology specialists will be found in salons and spas; in the stage, movie or fashion industry; on cruise ships; in dermatology and reconstructive surgical offices; and in retail sales and marketing.

Find cosmetology schools by searching the many options onsite.
