Continental Airlines

February 28, 2009 Uncategorized No Comments

Continental Airlines is one of the leading carriers in the United States. Its history started in 1934 with Mr. Walter Varney establishing the airlines called after him Varney Speed Lines at El Paso International Airport. A couple of years later Mr. Robert Six took over the company and moved headquarters to Stapleton Airport in Denver, Colorado. Six ran the company for forty years. In its sixty eight year history the company went through two bankruptcies, in 1983 and 1991.

On February 29, 1996, the Wall Street Journal reported that Continental gave its shareholders the fifth best return of any public company during 1995 and ranked it number one among eight other airlines with a return that was 213.9% above the peer average. Continental’s stock was trading near its 52-week high point. Continental was growing, serving more and more cities all over the world. On July 17, 1996 the company split its stock 2 for 1. A number of times Continental was named one of the “100 best companies to work for”. Everything was going just fine until September 11, 2001. Along with World Trade Center buildings the airline business collapsed. When in 2000 Continental generated $342 million of net income then in 2001 it was $95 million loss and in 2002 company experienced net loss of $451. It seemed that the second quarter of the present year went well for the company; finally one can see positive numbers on the financial reports of the company ($100 million dollars of net income for the 2nd quarter).

However, another great challenge for Continental, just as for any other airline, happened to be the sufficient increase in the prices for fuel. Apart from high fuel costs that sufficiently affect the profitability of the company Continental also experiences high labor costs for flight attendants, excessive taxation, increased security costs and significant pension liabilities. Continental management views present U.S. domestic network carrier financial environment as poor and could deteriorate further. Another threat Continental Airlines being the 5th largest carrier in the U.S. and 6th in the world is the growth of low-cost domestic carriers. Although, one the Continental’s strength and ways out of this situation is having a great number of international routes. As a matter of fact, Continental has more international destinations than any other U.S. airline.

Since September 11, 2001 when the company started experiencing substantial losses one of the most crucial goals and objectives for Continental became any possible cost cutter. Of course, the easiest way to cut the operation costs is to decrease the labor costs. Continental changed wages, work rules and benefits for all employees except the flight attendants and certain employees of wholly-owned subsidiary Continental Micronesia, Inc. (“CMI”) who are subject to collective bargaining agreements. Company began implementing changes in early April 2005, which, when fully implemented, are expected to result in approximately $418 million of annual pay and benefits cost savings on a run-rate basis.

Despite all the difficulties the company continues to grow. It is very important that Continental management understands that even substantial cuts in labor costs will not bring the company back to the long-term profitability. That is why Continental Airlines expand even more. By 2007 they plan to open a first non-stop from the United States route to Shanghai. The company also expects the delivery of 34 Boeing aircrafts by the end of 2006 and another 44 aircrafts from 2008 till 2011. The numbers clearly show that Continental Airlines expect on growing and apparently improving the financial figures. Most people probably think that it is unethical to cut workers’ wages and expand the company at the same time. However, if Continental chose to reduce its business how many workers would lose their jobs in this case?

The expanding strategy is the good plan to come back to the profitability, only if the concept of “economies of scale” works in this situation. By expanding Continental consequently will have to increase their labor force and along with cutting wages and benefits for employees it could be a tough task.

How Do You Manage Homeschooling Costs?

February 28, 2009 Uncategorized No Comments

Home schooling can be less expensive than sending your child to an educational institution. While a home school education is less costly than a private school, it can be more expensive than a public school if you are not careful.

Starting out

For one thing, if you’re just beginning with home schooling (and if you don’t have a teaching background), it is recommended that you subscribe to an independent study program or buy a boxed curriculum suited to your child’s skill level. While these may cost, these will guide your first few attempts at home schooling and help eliminate the trial-and-error process in finding out how to run your home school just right. These services and products range from a low of $300 to a high of $1,500 depending on the program.

Direct costs

However, the costs do not end there. You will need to supplement the program with textbooks as well as workbooks. Up-to-date reference materials are also needed such as an encyclopedia CD-ROM and Internet access. These will require purchases and subscriptions as well.

It will do your child much good to provide proper furniture and fixtures for studying. Getting them a proper study table, a comfortable chair and adequate lighting will show positive results in the child’s attitude towards learning. A computer to aid in their research and homework is also essential.

It is also possible that you may have to avail of tutorial services to cover subjects that you may have difficulty in teaching yourself. These can be done on a per course/per subject basis which may help reduce costs, but not by much. For example, a one-on-one advanced history class for high school students can cost about $300.

To provide a well-rounded education for your child, you will also need to include non-academic activities as well. This may mean music, sport or art lessons and perhaps even planned educational trips to museums and galleries, theaters, and nature parks.

Opportunity costs

These are the direct costs of running a home school program but in calculating the total cost for running a home school, you may also need to consider certain indirect costs.

A study on families on home study programs noted that on average, the parent conducting the home school is the mother, who holds a college degree. It has been calculated that her staying at home, instead of working, costs the family an estimated $38,000 every year – money that could have possibly been used to address the family’s other pending needs.

Helping defray the costs

But before you get fully discouraged with the idea of home schooling, there are ways to reduce the expenses. One way is to participate in support groups for home schooling families.

This affords you a great opportunity to share resources with similar families saving you the need to buy an entire set of materials for your child. Joining groups like these allow you to borrow or swap things like textbooks, boxed curricula or reference materials. An added plus to joining home school family groups in your area is giving your child the opportunity to interact with kids just like him/her who are home schooled as well.

Depending on where you live, some states allow home-schooled children access to public school resources and some local virtual charter schools provide teaching materials for little to no cost. Some will even offer annual stipends to pay for activities like piano lessons. Taking the time to know what assistance you can avail of to help subsidize the costs will more than pay for the effort you made to do so.

Some money-saving tips

It helps to know that if you have other children, the costs of home schooling can be reduced with each child since the materials may be reused or renewed for a much lower cost.

Take the time to explore your public library and use what they have to offer. They’ll be more than happy to see you visit as frequently as every week. This greatly reduces the need to buy books every time and on occasion allows you access to newly published ones that would otherwise be expensive.

Visit yard sales, book sales or swap meets whenever you can. You may just find that perfect study table, teaching aids or that hard-to-find textbook for a fraction of the cost of buying it from a store.

When considering the costs of something as important as your child’s education, it is best to think of them as investments rather than as mere expenses. When managed properly, the money you spend will go a long way in giving your children a memorable childhood and unique learning experience.

Living In Arizona Boulders–Where Did They Come From?

February 28, 2009 Uncategorized No Comments

When most people think of building a secluded home, they think of tall trees and large bushes. But what about boulders?

Granite Park, located in Prescott, Arizona, which is in the north central part of the state, is one such place filled with 1.4 billion-year-old towering granite rock formations.

Rock formations of this type are rare in the United States. Northern Arizona to southern California are the most common locations for these statuesque boulders.

Formed in the Precambrian age, 1.4 billion years ago, these rocks started life under the earth’s surface as large masses of molten rock, according to Dr. Archie M. Dickey, professor of environmental science at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. The rocks then cool before reaching the surface.

“This procedure is referred to as an intrusive igneous rock formation,” said Dr. Dickey. “The molten rocks cool slowly and in the process form large, course-grained rocks.”

After the granite was exposed at the surface, it was then at the mercy of the elements. Wind, rain, snow all started eroding the rocks. However, in the case of these particular formations, they produced their unique shapes and vistas because the granite first weathered in blocky, rectangular joints. You can actually see this throughout Granite Park – the blocky reddish-brown linear lines on the boulders.

Dr. Dickey explains that as the weathering continued, the granite turned into its now round distinctive shape. This type of weathering is called spheroidal weathering.

Residents of the new Granite Park community will be not just be able to enjoy living in privacy with these massive, statuesque boulders, but be able to stroll down trails featuring these two-hundred-foot high rock cliffs and four-foot-wide passages.

Robert Norman is vice president of Sun Pine Homes, a custom home builder and developer in Prescott, Arizona. His current project is developing Granite Park, a residential community first founded in1905 and filled with 1.4 billion-year boulders. Nile Monitor Lizard Information

February 27, 2009 Uncategorized No Comments

Appearance

The Nile Monitor lizard is one of the largest within the Monitor class of lizards. They can typically reach up to 7 feet in length. They are brown in color ranging from light to dark brown.

Enclosure

As for an enclosure a full room is typically suggested. This is due to several factors including their desire to climb. Furthermore, the Nile Monitors like to swim so a decent sized pond should be provided for them. Some sort of a hiding area should also be provided for them, as well as good sturdy branches for climbing. Due to the large height required for the Monitors a heater below the enclosure is recommended for good surface heat. For light, unfiltered sunlight is the absolute best, however UV radiation lights offering a full spectrum of rays can be used in place of sunlight as is the same for most lizards.

Food

The Nile Monitors will eat any type of rodent that they are able to swallow. In the wild these lizards will also frequently eat fish as they are typically close to a water source. Having the capability to dive for up to one hour at a time and being very agile in the water contribute to the fish consumption. In addition, some Nile Monitors may like to be fed cooked eggs.

Breeding

Anywhere from 7 to 35 eggs are laid at a time by the Monitors. Usually they dig a hole along the river bed and lay their eggs there.
