Our Universal Address-the Solar System

November 30, 2008 Uncategorized No Comments

Where do you live? That’s a common question and the common answer is such-and-such Street. We may live apart in terms of street, city, and even nation, but we all have a common address, the Solar System!

How did the solar system come into existence? It is generally believed that it emerged from a gaseous cloud several billion years ago and planets, an important component of the system, were formed out of this gaseous cloud and its dust.

Till last year we all knew that there were nine planets in the Solar System, but now Pluto is officially an outcast! This is because Pluto does not fit the International Astronomical Union’s (IAU) definition of a planet. It is now a dwarf planet.

The chief member of our solar system is the Sun, and its keeps planets in order by its gravitational pull. The Sun is a bright star and exudes heat and light through nuclear fusion. Apart from the Sun, our solar system contains planets, natural satellites, dwarf planets, and small solar system bodies.

A planet, according to the IAU, is a spherical object that orbits the Sun. It must have no small objects near it. Today, there are eight recognized planets in the solar system: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Mercury and Venus have no natural satellite unlike the other six. The Earth’s natural satellite is the Moon.

Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars are known as the inner planets, while Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune are the outer planets. The former are rocky, have minerals and metals, have few or no natural satellites, and don’t have rings. The latter are known as gas giants and have rings.

Dwarf planets are also spherical objects orbiting the Sun, but unlike planets their surroundings don’t have to be clear of smaller celestial bodies. Pluto, Ceres, and Eris are the dwarf planets in the solar system.

Small solar system bodies include asteroids and comets. Trans-Neptunian objects and other small celestial objects also come under this category. Asteroids are mainly found in the region between Mars and Jupiter. They are rocky objects that could span several hundred kilometers or be small like dust. Ceres is the largest asteroid. Comets are mainly made of ice, and when they come near the Sun this ice melts to form a comma like shape. Comets that have orbits less than 200 years, such as, Halley’s Comet are known as short-period comets, while those with orbits spanning thousands of years are known as long period comets. Small solar system bodies that lie in the region beyond Neptune are known as Trans-Neptunian objects.

Technological advances in the form of telescope and spacecraft have helped scientists to obtain a lot of information about the solar system. It’s not a static situation out there, and as new technologies develop here, new and exciting facts about the solar system are uncovered. And you are wrong if you thought only astronomers and scientists looked through the telescope, it’s a hobby for thousands of people!

Alan Simpson’s “The Marks of An Educated Man” – A Review

November 30, 2008 Uncategorized No Comments

In his essay, “The Marks of An Educated Man,” Alan Simpson writes that the training of the mind will help an individual achieve higher knowledge skills. The best results of liberal education cannot be achieved until the mind is trained to think clearly. Without proper brain-training a true liberal education cannot take place.

Since everyone’s brain does not function the same, the same amount of knowledge may not be present in two different individuals. Simpson talks of utilizing everyone’s capacity to think and examine life firmly, therefore making a true liberal education possible, which in turn allows for progress and reform in our educational system.

One of the main thoughts that Alan Simpson presents is the idea of not being afraid to make changes, especially if they will lead to progress in our traditional systems. Simpson goes on to state that a characteristic skill of an educated man is his ability to recognize phony doctrines. A certain amount of skepticism is needed to combat the fact-filled scam artists and fools that populate the earth today.

Without a proper education, we make ourselves more gullible to false teachings. The educated man has tried to develop a critical faculty for general use, and likes to think himself an excellent judge of phoniness. Having doubt allows a person to expand his or her insights on a subject. A person who seeks after a good education will usually ask questions and make sure he or she is given a good answer before being taken in by something false.

The fools, scam artists, and frauds in this wold can mislead others by presenting false messages. The majority who practice this are nothing more than blatant liars, but feel they have a sanctity about them that puts them above everyone else. These so called “authorities” are nothing more than fact finders and very often end up getting caught in their own traps.

Without a liberal education they cannot combine knowledge, skills, an standards. They are for the most part affected by the environment and the media. Lacking a liberal education makes them very open to scams and they are definitely not analyzing, praying, or thinking over situations as they should. These are the victims of prideful scam artists.

Having good liberal education skills can be a preventive device against highly educated scam artists. Shams are a reality to us even in higher education brackets. They surround us everywhere. From the professor to the scientist, both have been known to use invalid and shameful speech. Although persons at the university level can be taken in by shams, people who have little or no educational background are especially prone and will almost certainly fall prey to shams.

University students are influenced by professors and clergymen, but people in the outside of college world are largely influenced simply by what they read, view, and hear.

Simpson’s essay reveals that possessing liberal education skills enables a person to recognize false doctrines. Non-educated people will allow an individual to influence them negatively more than liberally educated persons. Educated persons help to keep the fools and scam artists in their place and away from the follies of human nature within shams.

Alan Simpson concludes his essay with a riveting and arousing statement: “We are none the better for not recognizing a clown when we see one.”

Billing Code Books: ICD Books, CPT Books, HCPCS – What Are They?

November 30, 2008 Uncategorized No Comments

Medical Billing Code books are a necessary part of medical insurance billing. You will find that you are frequently looking up codes and you need up to date code books to accomplish this.

Medical billing codes change every year and when they are outdated, the insurance companies will no longer accept them and your claims will be denied for the codes.

What billing code books are available and required? CPT4, ICD9, HCPCS, and RBRVS are all available.

CPT Code Books – or Current Procedural Terminology. Services and procedures performed by physicians are described by the use of CPT codes. CPT code books are listings of all procedure codes with an explanation of each code. They are listed both by number and alphabetically.

These codes are updated annually and it is important to be aware of the changes each year. Sometimes the changes are minimal, but sometimes there are a lot of changes and it impacts a provider greatly.

CPT Code Books also contain a list of modifiers. Modifiers indicate that a service was altered in some way from the stated CPT descriptor without changing the definition. The American Medical Association (AMA) CPT modifiers are two-digit numeric codes listed after a procedure code .

ICD Code books or The International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification. The ICD9 coding system is an international classification system which groups related disease entities and procedures for the purpose of reporting statistical information. It is a system of descriptions and codes used to record the occurrence of medical diagnoses.

ICD9 Billing Code Books list diagnoses both alphabetically and numerically. These codes are also updated annually. Again, the updates are very important. If you use outdated ICD9 codes your claims will most likely be denied.

HCPCS Code Books – or Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System. HCPCS is a standardized coding system that is used primarily to identify products, supplies, and services not included in the CPT codes, such as ambulance services and durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics, and supplies (DMEPOS) when used outside a physician’s office.

As with the other billing code books, HCPCS are also updated annually. Unless you are a provider, or a billing service who bills for a provider, who supplies patients with services or supplies not covered in the CPT4 code book, you will not use these codes.

You can also purchase specialized code books. We’ve seen them for anesthia coding,
Chiropractic coding, physical therapy and allergy coding. If you are a specialty office, or you are a billing service who bills for only a small group of specialty providers, you may want to look into these. They are usually less expensive and contain data only relative to that specialty.

Michele Redmond is the co owner of a medical billing service with her mother, Alice Scott. Together they are responsible for the medical billing for over 50 providers. Charlotte Schools Doing Better and Teachers Awarded in 2006

November 29, 2008 Uncategorized No Comments

Charlotte Jaycees Award Charlotte School Teachers

The Charlotte Jaycees have awarded three teachers in the Charlotte Schools on their annual Ten Outstanding Young Charlotteans list. The teachers named are: Emma Barnes, Hawk Ridge Elementary; Jeffrey Joyce, Northwest School of the Arts; and Mary Katherine Patton, Selwyn Elementary. The Ten Outstanding Young Charlotteans list honors area residents ages 21 to 40 who have shown outstanding performance in personal improvement, financial success or economic innovation, social improvement, philanthropic contributions, politics or government service, scientific or technological contributions, legal reform, cultural achievement, academic leadership, moral and religious leadership, athletic accomplishment, success in the influence of public opinion.

Mrs. Barnes is a second grade teacher at the Hawk Ridge Elementary in the Charlotte Schools. She is currently pursuing a Master’s degree and is on the Advisory Board for Reach Out and Read Charlotte. Mrs. Barnes was named to the list for her work in establishing a book drive at Hawk Ridge to collect gently used books for Reach Out and Read Clinics. Her book drive has now been developed for all Charlotte Schools’ elementary programs.

Mr. Joyce, a social studies teacher at the Northwest School of the Arts, is an active participant in the Yale Teaching Project. Due to his work on this project, Yale has made him their local recruiter and hopes he can expand the program throughout the Charlotte Schools. He was named to the list for his work in the relief efforts for Tsunami and Katrina victims.

Ms. Patton is a second grade teacher at Selwyn Elementary and is the former recipient of the First Year Teacher of the Year at Selwyn Elementary. She was named to the Ten Outstanding Young Charlotteans list for her work in Katrina and Rita relief. Through Ms. Patton’s efforts, two Charlotte Schools Billingsville Elementary and Selwyn Elementary raised $25,000 for the Red Cross. She was also able to help convince Lowe’s to issues a matching donation, as well.

Charlotte Schools Continue to Raise Test Scores

High schools in the Charlotte Schools have continued their five year trend of higher test scores. The results of the end of the course test for the 2005-2006 school year show that a higher percentage of students performing at or above grade level this year compared to last year. Charlotte Schools’ high schools now have 64% of all students performing at or above grade level. The greatest improvement in scores was seen at three Charlotte Schools, East Mecklenburg High School, Independence High School and Vance High School. Each high school had an approximate increase in scores of 6%, raising each well above the 50% of students at grade level performance. Other high schools in the Charlotte Schools that have shown improvement include Garinger High School, West Charlotte High School and West Mecklenburg High School. However, none of these high schools reached the 50% mark.

It is believed that these improvements are the result of Charlotte Schools’ reforms over the past few years. School reforms have aimed to place more resources in the classroom, use a lead teacher model in the schools, improve the schedule to allow more time in core subjects, and improve overall teaching standards. Some schools in the Charlotte Schools system have introduced additional measures, such as after school study groups and Saturday tutorials. Others have begun to divide the high school into small specialized sections that can give greater focus in core areas.

4 Levels of Spiritual Warfare Against Demonic Spirits

November 29, 2008 Uncategorized No Comments

In the realm of having to do battle with demonic spirits from time to time – I believe there are 4 basic levels in which a Christian may have to face. Having the specific knowledge on what each one of these levels are all about can really help with planning and carrying out the appropriate battle strategy in which to defeat them should demons ever move in for an attack on either you or any of your close loved ones.

Every time that Jesus told His apostles to go out and walk with His anointing to save the lost and heal the sick – He always had the command in there to also cast out demonic spirit where and when needed.

So if Jesus was constantly casting out demons, always telling the apostles to cast out demons – then it should only be logical that the church should continue to cast out demons.

It has been estimated by many Bible scholars that approximately 25% of the miracles Jesus had performed were Him casting demons out of people. Satan and his demons are not confined to the Bottomless Pit at this time. This event will not happen until Jesus returns back to us in His second coming. Until that event happens, Satan and his demons are still free to roam in the “air” seeking who they are going to try and devour next.

As Christians, we always have to remember that the devil and his demons are already defeated animals. Jesus has already defeated Satan at the cross when He was crucified.

What is now left is that all Christians have to realize that the victory is already ours. We thus have to learn how to engage and defeat the devil and his demons when they do try to move into a person or a situation – and sometimes this means a real live deliverance – because demons can and do attach themselves to people when they do move in for an attack. And once they do, the only way to be able to drive them out is by the power of God!

Here are the 4 different ways and avenues that demons can move in for an attack on someone – whether the person be a Christian or a nonbeliever. There are rules to the war games that are going on behind the scenes between God and the devil for all of our souls. To be forewarned is to be properly armed.

1. The first level is when demons move in for an attack with no real legal right to be able to do so. This is exactly what happened to Jesus when He was out in the wilderness for 40 days and 40 nights. Satan had no legal right to be coming after Him, but he did anyway and Jesus drove him away by quoting the Word back to him.

2. The second level is when demons do have a legal right to be coming after you. And one of the ways that you give demons the legal right to be able to attack you is by crossing over and entering into some of the heavier sins and transgressions expressly forbidden by our Lord from His Word.

3. The third level is when demons attack as a result of what someone has may have done to you. Sometimes victims of crimes such as rape and assault, or receiving severe abuse from a parent or spouse can cause demons to try and move in to attach to the victim – trying to feed off the negative emotions of hate, anger, unforgiveness and wanting to get revenge on the attacker or abuser.

4. The fourth level is when demons will try and attach to someone as a result of a generational curse line coming from a severe sinning, dysfunctional parent or parents. For instance, an alcoholic father can end up producing children who end up becoming alcoholic themselves. Demons will attempt to jump and transfer from the father onto some of the children trying to get them to commit the same type of sin their parent had been committing.

As Christians, we have to have knowledge of our enemies and how they will try and attack us. Many Christians are getting defeated or taken home too early from this life as a result of not having some basic 101 knowledge in spiritual warfare.
