Preparing For The NCLEX

Preparing for the national boards begins as soon as a nursing student begins nursing school. Licensure as a Registered Nurse is granted upon a student passing the national boards or NCLEX. Passing scores are based on the amount of questions that the nurse gets correct in relation to the national average. Therefore there is no discrete passing grade.

The fact that nursing students are started on licensure testing preparation so early into their curriculum is a testimony to those nursing schools with the highest and most numerous passing scores. Choosing a nursing school should be based on credentialing and the schools success rate of passing the national boards. Certain schools that are not accredited will be able to graduate nurses with an Associate Degree in Applied Science. However, graduates from these unaccredited schools will not be able to continue to their bachelors in nursing at an accredited university. The same is to be said of diploma nurses.

Passing the national boards is the final culmination of all of the work a student nurse has put into nursing school. The scores are listed by a number and if the student scores at a level that is termed, /“unsafe”, /then the student must retake the exam. Those students who do not take these online exams seriously are surprised that when it comes close to graduation they are prevented from graduating because they did not finish or repeat the tests with a passing score.

Number 1 – Maybe…but…

This is one of my favourites because it can be applied to almost any situation and there’s no arguing with it. I use the maybe…but…phrase so often that my students know it so well they can finish my sentences for me.

It goes like this. When a student is misbehaving or complaining that they shouldn’t get a detention because their pet alligator ate their textbook you simply say:

“Maybe it did, but I’d like you to stay behind for detention thank you.”

Or when you’re telling Danielle to be quiet when you’re talking, and she’s complaining that in fact it was Brittany who was talking. You simply say:

“Maybe it was, but I’d like you to put your pen down and listen now, thank you.”

Number 2 – Really?

This is a great one which is fantastic as a classroom management strategy because you show that you simply don’t care what argument the student has, you still want them to get on with the lesson.

When a pupil is complaining that something isn’t fair, say this:

“Really? You think it’s not fair? That’s a pity…moving on then…”

The great thing about this technique is that pupils can’t argue with you if you don’t care and if you stand your ground. Show them that you know your expectations and you’re sticking to them.

Number 3 – Silence

Yes, number 3 on my all-time top 3 phrases to use to quieten a class is to say nothing! Classroom management strategies are all about getting the behavior you want, without disrupting the flow of the lesson. The best way to do this is to convey what you want without words.

How do you do it? Use non-verbal signals. When you use non-verbal signals regularly, you and your class will have your own ’sign language’. The greatest thing about this technique is that you can continue as normal with your teaching, so that no other student is disrupted. And the student misbehaving doesn’t get any attention for his behavior. You can save your attention for the students who behave as you expect.

Communicating in college is crucial. You have to be able to voice your opinions clearly and effectively on a daily basis. Here five tips for sharpening your communication skills in college.

1. Speak up

If no one can hear you, it won’t matter what you say. Make your points like you mean it. Clear your throat and address the class confidently. Be certain that you’ve thought for a moment before you opening your mouth. Once you’ve mentally organized what it is you want to say, execute the verbal expression of your thoughts as clearly as possible. Don’t go overboard with the volume (you don’t want to be a disturbance), but be sure that you can be heard by everyone.

2. Outside of the classroom, practice reading aloud to someone.

This tactic works wonders. When you read aloud to someone, you practice so many things. You get to hone your ability to speak loud and clear. You gain comfort you’re your ability to vocalize the text, and you can calm any concerns you may have about speaking in public. This latter part is why you have to take turns reading aloud to another person. Reading aloud by yourself is too easy. With another person present, the reading becomes a practical presentation.

3. Become well-informed.

Do you are homework as instructed, and read the assignments before you get to class. Communicating in your classes is difficult when you haven’t properly prepared. The more informed you are, the more pertinent you analysis will be. Don’t just speak so that you can hear yourself talk, have something valuable to say. The more work you’ve done, the more comfortable you will feel expressing your ideas.

4. Have educated debates outside of class.

Discuss what you are learning with others, and let others share what they have learned. You are not going to be able to take every single class that you want, so learn form other people’s experiences. Ask questions and exchange ideas. Practice articulating your positions in a comfortable environment. This way, when it’s time for you to speak up in class, you’ll have already had experience articulating you thoughts out loud.

5. Meet your professors during office hours.

If you want a better handle on the material you’re studying, go see your professor during office hours, You’ll learn added insights and extra contexts. You’ll be able to frame your ideas more effectively, because you will have added familiarity with the subjects you are studying. If you can debate your professors in their office, you can certainly voice your opinions in class.

Why do kids see ghosts and things? Some say it is because their brains are still forming and they are developing their cache of images or learning to understand depth perception and such. There are a huge number of theories and a lot of science on the topic actually of how human sensory perception is developed from babies to adults.

What if the life experience is an illusion and it takes a little while for the children to adjust their brains and their sensory perception to see the world in the way that is set up rather than the actual? We also know that animals perceive the world different than we do as their eyes are different and their sensory perception is also slightly different. It works for them but it is not the same as human beings, thus they have a different perspective on life and how they view things.

Perhaps the reason why some adults believe in ghosts is because when they were very small they could not understand all that they were viewing as their brains were forming and some of those images and memories are still within their brain. Locked somewhere deep in their subconscious and therefore they think there is something else other than what they see because now they see things different than they once did.

Or perhaps the world is not as it appears and rather an illusion and a different sort of perception that we are currently seeing and in this case may be the ghosts that children think they see really are there and we can’t see them because now we have adjusted to see things in a different way.
